Asst. Prof. Sven Jelaska, PhD

Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb

The fileld of scientific work of Dr. Jelaska includes different aspects of biodiversity distribution, but primarly the spatial distribution of flora and vegetation. Using the GIS, statistical methods and other technologies he integrates various types of data relevant for description and explanation of spatial distribution of biological entities. He managed the creation of "Preliminary ecological network of Croatia", and co-managed the LIFE02 TCY project "Ecological Network of Croatia as a part of PEEN and NATURA2000 network". As a biodiversity expert he participated in UNDP/GEF project "Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in the Dalmatian Coast through Greening Coastal Development ("COAST")" and in "National report on climate change 1996.-2003.". He has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers on various aspects dealing with vascular flora and vegetation.

Where to be or not to be - spatial aspects of biodiversity conservation

Abstract

Knowing the geographical origin of our target objects is irreplaceable in understanding their ecology, source of threats, conservation plans etc. Furthermore, it enable us usage of remote sensing data for acquisition of additional data that can be used for various analyses including prediction of potential habitats for target species, areas with high expected biodiversity value etc. However, in the dependence of available data and their spatial resolution, different things could play role. Various spatial aspects of conservation biology will be discussed.
